ORCAS

Royal Alberta Museum

Overview

To bring a world-class marine exhibit to landlocked Alberta, the design couldn’t just display the aquatic world of the orca, it had to be inspired and dictated by it.

The visual identity was crafted from the unseen architecture of the sea: echolocation. The clicks, whistles, and acoustic pulses orcas use to navigate were translated into a rhythm-driven design system featuring custom illustrations and variable line work that mimic sonic frequencies. This was paired with a living colour palette sampled directly from the five main oceans orcas inhabit, from the inky indigos of the Arctic to the sun-lit blues of the Pacific.
