Overview
On March 21, 2026 (World Down Syndrome Day) adidas launched the Supernova Adaptive, the first shoe inspired by and designed with people with Down syndrome and other disabilities.
The design of a truly adaptive performance shoe took three years, from initial meetings to foot testing, from one prototype to the next, hundreds of miles of wear-testing, focus groups and rounds of feedback from both people with Down syndrome and a broad spectrum of disabilities.
The five main features: a stiff heel-counter, a magnetic closure and tactile toggle, a gusseted tongue, a low-pressure lacing system, and a wider toe-box have been designed and adapted through work, initially with the Down syndrome community, and now with the 1.3 billion person disabled community, to fully address their unique foot differences.
The Supernova Adaptive has received the GAMUT Seal of Approval™, a mark to assure customers who purchase adaptive products that a stringent set of requirements developed by experts in the disability space have been met.
The shoe is now available globally at adidas.com and in a number of adidas and specialty-shoe and sporting goods stores in 29 countries.

In the first week, in the US:
- Sales were 1.5x product launch benchmarks
- Some sizes already sold out
- 42% of all US purchases on adidas.com have come from first-time adidas buyers.
